ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS FOR 11TH GRADE PROJECT

Essential Questions for 11th Grade project


Each of the following questions must be answered in detail. Research should be done on the general concept of "UTOPIA," as well as on the specific questions raised, so that your answers will be informed and thorough. Your first, immediate step is to create an outline. This outline will demonstrate your strategy for answering the questions. As always, DO YOUR BEST WORK (smile)



I. How would you define a Utopian Society?
A. A Utopian Society is a society that has perfect political and social order.
1. A perfect society seems close, but is very far away. The ideal society consists of 3 things:
a. appreciation
b. fairness
c. understanding
II. What are the ideas [i.e. freedom, responsibility, justice, community, etc.] that should be honored in a Utopian Society?
A. Everyone will want his or her own ideas based on their personality.
B. But there will be the basic thing that many would want in their community:
1. Peace
a. Everyone will want the society/ neighborhood to be peaceful.
2. No Crime
a. They will want all of their surroundings to be crime free.
3. Respect
a. Everyone will receive and be given the proper respect.
4. No Laws
a. There will be no laws because everyone will do the right thing.


III. Has the concept of Utopia changed overtime and /or across cultures and societies?
A. The concept of Utopia has not changed.
1. But the same process has been carried through different cultures and societies.
B. The values and the morals have changed.
1. Depending on the traditions of the culture or society.

IV. Why do people continue to pursue the concept of a Utopia Society?
A. They cannot keep up with society’s expectations so they create their safe place with:
1. order
2. no laws
3. peace
V. How do competing notions of what a Utopia Society should look like lead to conflict?
A. There could be different opinions.
B. Everyone will be entitled to his or her own observation.
VI. What is the purpose and/ or consequence of creating a Dystopian Society?
A. A Dystopian Society is the opposite of an Utopian Society ran be authority or some type of government using oppressive means to control the people.
1. With a Dystopian Society their will be:
a. no order
b. confusion
c. chaos
VII. Is Utopia attainable? At what cost would it be worth attaining?
A. Utopia is not attainable In the society we live in now there is too much:
1. crime
2. laws that are not followed
3. attitudes
4. violence
B. The only way Utopia can be attained is if everyone on Earth died and the circle of life started over.
